چکیده

An advanced class of robots and intelligent machines that adapt, extend, and work in a symbiotic way with humans, is required and is under research in University and Industry laboratories. These robots do not only work for humans, but also they work with or assist humans, and share with the users the same environment. This paper presents an hybrid control architecture with reactive, deliberative, and cognitive components appropriate to human-oriented mobile robots. The architecture is under development and has been tested in a motorized wheechair equipped with several sensors and a multimodal HMI (Human-Machine Interface). A joystick and a voice unit interface (VUI) are used to steer the wheelchair, giving accessibility to handicaped persons. Key-Words: Assistive navigation, control architectures, human-oriented robotics, reactive behaviours, kinematics

NavChair: An Example of a Shared-Control System for Assistive Technologies

The NavChair assistive navigation system was originally conceived as an application of mobile robot obstacle avoidance to a power wheelchair. In this system, the user shares wheelchair control with obstacle avoidance and other navigation components. The philosophy of shared control has important implications for the design of these components. This paper discusses the development of navigation ...

Toward Smooth and Stable Reactive Mobile Robot Navigation using On-line Control Set-points

This paper deals with the challenging issue of online mobile robot navigation in cluttered environment. Indeed, it is considered in this work, a mobile robot discovering the environment during its navigation, it should thus, to react to unexpected events (e.g., obstacles to avoid) while guaranteeing to reach its objective. Nevertheless, in addition to avoid safely and on-line these obstacles, i...

Sensorimotor-Cognitive Couplings in the Context of Assistive Spatial Navigation for Older Adults

DOI 10.1024/1662-9647/a000010 Abstract. With advancing adult age, sensorimotor functioning, spatial processing, and the motivation to explore new environments decline, leading to impaired spatial navigation skills. Using a controlled virtual-world laboratory equipped with a treadmill interface, we examined how assistive navigation technologies differing in cognitive demand affect walking regula...

A Mobile-Cloud Pedestrian Crossing Guide for the Blind

The ability to detect the status of pedestrian signals at street intersections is a critical aspect of safe outdoor navigation for the blind and visually-impaired, especially in unfamiliar environments. Existing outdoor navigation devices for the blind prove insufficient in providing such guidance due to their reliance on limited mobile computational resources. In this work, we propose a mobile...
